I Read some great news today on the Cover Dog message board. It said that Bob Kluger has officially Bred Ally McB. What that means is that I will have a pup in 4 months. So this page will soon have a new daily face. That Is good news in the morning!

Last summer I lost one of my most favorite hunting buddies. I met him about 15 years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was frightened, bewildered and a bit groggy after arriving at the Raleigh-Durham Airport after a long flight from Kansas City, Missouri. I could see that he had not regained his equilibrium as he staggered to me and meekly put his head between my knees. I scratched his ears, patted his head and reassured him that everything was O.K. My new friend was an eight month old English Setter. We became immediate buddies. That bond remained until he died on June 23, 2005.

I called him Duffy, naming him after his previous owner, Jim Duffy. His thick white coat was dappled with small lemon specks. As he grew older, he carried himself with the style and grace similar to those old English Setter poses you see on hunting calendars in hardware stores and auto repair shops.

As I look back over our relationship, I’ m not certain whether I owned Duffy or he owned me. We spent the first couple of years getting to know each other’s peculiarities. I was a slow deliberate hunter while he was a tough, wide-ranging, hardheaded dog that wanted to go, go, go. I tried every trick known to mankind and then some to keep him close while we were in the field. I think I must have worn out 5 whistles during those first couple of years! It wasn’t until I finally resorted to an electronic training collar that I finally gained some resemblance of control over him. He possessed a drive that knew no bounds. With limitless determination he attacked the brush-laded cut-overs of Bertie and Hertford counties, the briar-clad ditches of Hyde County and the wide, spacious grasslands of Nebraska.

He developed into a pretty good bird-hunting dog but would have been much better if he had an experienced trainer (not me) and an ample supply of quail to hunt. Duffy always tried his best. He never handled every covey of quail properly when he found but, then, I never hit every quail he pointed either. I must say that we had many great times together.

As he reached his 10th year I could see the sands of time slowly beginning to run out. After a hard hunt he couldn’t leap up into the dog box like he had done so easily in the past. During the last year he was content to run along the paths and field edges rather than going into the thick cover. Then, again, I was also looking for the easy way pathways!

Last summer it became apparent that those muscles that had propelled his lean body through countless miles of thickets, briars and open fields were no longer up to the task. Then, one morning he could not even get out of his doghouse. The spirit was willing but his body could not respond. Duffy had hunted his last hunt.

Good bye old friend, I’ll remember all those good, and some not so good, times we had together. I can still visualize that icy morning when you made your first solid point on a covey of birds huddled beneath a large wild rose bush that was covered with a beautiful coating of frozen rain. That scene is etched into my brain. You gave me many fond memories. Thank you. I’ll miss you.

It is really tough to get a shot of penny looking at the camera. I am not sure what she is afraid of she sees one everyday. But now that her vision is poor she cant tell that I have a camera when I am father away.

We checked ou the trails today It always amazes me that this dog is almost 15 and still trucking.. Let me do the math 7 x 15 years .. I think that is 105... Now imagine sending out your grandparents out on a run for several hours. My guess is they wouldnt dream of it.. June 2 she will be 15 in people years.

I am a bad speller, so I am sorry. You will have to get used to it... I have been practicing for 35 years and I continue to make mistakes.
I have had english setters my whole life... When I was a kid, in Michigan, my dad had 2 or 3 setters at all times. Mostly from the Elwin Smith bloodlines. Back in the 70's we had more pheasant than corn stalks in the fields behind our house . When my dad didn't go hunting the dogs would go alone. They would hunt for hours at a time.. pointing every pheasant in the field. Needless to say our setters were pretty good hunters.
My current dog is one that I became very attached to while visiting my old man. Some how.. I was able to convince him to let me have her. It didnt seam to bother him because he had 2 or 3 other dogs with potential. Well that was 13 years ago and My dog is 15 now. As we all know setters will hunt until they are dead. Penny dog is no different. Last october I took her out as much as I had time for... and she ran like she did 10 years ago. The problem is that She is hard of hearing and is growing blind. Watching her health diminish is difficult for both of us as we are pretty close friends and this is our favorate past time. This year I had to use a beeping collar to keep track of her. I never liked the beeping collars it seemed to diminish the serenity of the out doors more so than than the distant sound of a dog bell. But I now realize the importance of slightly invasive jewelry... I am not sure that Penny and I would have walked out of the woods together last fall with out it.

I have been around setters long enough to know that Penny is in her twilight years. The oldest one I have ever been around was 16. I hate to really think about the future like this too much.. It gets sorta sad. That is why I have started to look for another pup, I am not sure what it would be like with out a dog. I think that I have looked at 800 web sights. I have talked to 30 guys on the phone not to mention the countless hours small talking my old man. The American Field has been a god send. I have thumbed through my dads subscription for many years but the last two years I have really enjoyed reading it and come to understand its importance. Last time I went to visit my dad he had many back issues that I pretty much read cover to cover.. some had to be at least 15+ years old.. Even with the American field I wanted more info. Not all of the kennels or breeders are listed.. Just as all the kennels will not be listed here..

Well the reason I have deciced to make this blog is so that i just dont throw away all of my web addresses. That is alot of time spent locating these let alone looking at them. I would like to add more info with the help of any readers.. But this resource is just for English Setters, Training and Trials.

By no means is this a site ranking Kennels, Trainers or dogs. I am just putting a list together of the web addresses that I have viewed while searching for my future pup. Good luck finding your next dog.
